Saint John of God is known by many names. He goes by, Joao Cidade, Juan Ciudad, and Father of the Poor. He is the patron of hospital employees, and the physically and mentally ill. He was born Joao Cidade. As a young man he worked as a few things, such as a soldier, a shepherd,  and a traveling book peddler. At the age of about 43, he heard John of Avila speak of repentance. It was then that John had an epiphany. Joao gave what he owned, even his money, and was later hospitalized in the Royal Hospital in the psychiatric wing. Having a sad and dreadful experience there, he became dedicated to upgrading the hospital treatment there.

After being released, he was homeless and free from illusion. This helped him to develop a strong liking and attraction to the homeless and those who were no longer enfranchised.

Joao worked very very hard to help those who were sick and suffering from mental and physical illness. No matter how long it would take him to travel to get to them. He also helped those who needed shelter, with no where else to go. It was because of this that The Hospitaller Order of Saint John of God began. Running still to this day.

Joao would give what he could to help those in need. He opened up a facility and cared for those in need. He was known to counsel people, using bible versus as well. He helped to wash, feed, and then pray with those who entered his facility. People heard of this and were impressed by him. His dedication to help anyone. The lengths he would go through. People would donate and volunteer to help. It was those people who gave him the name of "John of God".

The dedication of the contributors and volunteers has helped John of God's mission to continue and spread  the practice of "hospitality".

John passed away March 8, 1550 of pneumonia, while in prayer after saving a man's life from drowning.
